Contemporary Psychiatric Issues in the Changing Society


Abstract
In order to analysis contemporary issues in psychiatry, the author reviews articles and papers in connection with psychiatric classification, psychiatric controversy, and psychiatric ethics.
Summary of the issues presented as follows;
1) Changing aspects of psychiatry between contemporary society and traditional society were summarized as follows:
? Changing practice of psychiatric treatment from individual approaches to group arrangements including group therapy, family therapy and milieu therapy.
? Extension and improvement of psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric personnels in rural areas according to changes of health delivery systems.
? Advancement on systematic and scientific techniques concerned with diagnostic instruments and management skills in psychiatry.
? Changes of psychiatric hospital politics from closed ward policy to partial hospitalization and open ward policy.
2) Major topics of Contemporary psychiatry in Korean Society were summarized as follows:
? The denial of excellent mental health care to the mentally handicapped patients, geographic inequities, and inequality in the delivery of psychiatric facilities.
? The issues of ensuring high quality psychiatry care by further expansion of psychiatric facilities, and the need for more and better continuing education programs in psychiatry were more significant pressing problems in contemporary society.
? Refreshment of therapeutic atmosphere was demanded by those who are poor and by members of minority groups.
? Inadequate supply of psychiatric professionals and neglecting obligation for psychiatric
training programs will prove to be a major hindrance and may prove bo be disastrous. 3) Current issues in psychiatric ethics were summarized as follows:
? Psychiatric ethics regarding topics as the doctor patient relation, professional competence,
contract practice, income, psychiatric records, anonymity and income sources must be stressed.
The other ethical problems such as examination, information, confidentiality, choice of treatment, hospitalization, suicidal & homicidal possibilities or destructive bohaviors must be posea in order to care patients.
¢ç Establishment of the appropriate and adequate guidelines for resolution of ethical conflicts in psychiatric personnels must be preserved.
¨Ï Every records concerned with patient¢¥s private information can¢¥t open without patient s permission.
